My kids have been outside since breakfast. They are done — sweaty, salty, hit the wall. One of them is lying face-down on the kitchen floor like a Victorian widow.

And here’s the part I’m supposed to feel bad about: I let them watch something.

I don’t. Not anymore. Because I stopped believing the problem was the screen, and started paying attention to what was on it. That’s the whole shift — and it’s why we ended up building a library of motivational shows for kids that I don’t have to supervise.

Is it bad to let kids watch TV in the summer?

No. Rest is not the opposite of growth — rest is where growth happens.

The American Academy of Pediatrics is direct about this: downtime isn’t time off from development, it’s a component of it. When kids stop, the brain doesn’t idle — it consolidates what it learned, reorganizes it, and files it. Less-structured time is linked to stronger executive function: planning, self-control, problem-solving.

The kid staring at the ceiling isn’t wasting your summer. He’s the one who’s about to come downstairs and ask for tape and a box.

Why do parents feel guilty about summer screen time?

Because we’ve been sold a version of summer where every hour is a resource to be maximized. Camps, enrichment, reading logs, structured play. If the kids are on the couch, you failed. Somewhere a Pinterest mom is doing a sensory bin.

I don’t buy it, and I don’t think you do either.

But here’s the thing — the guilt is misplaced, not baseless. Something is wrong. It just isn’t the screen.

What’s actually wrong with most kids’ shows?

The question was never whether. It’s what.

Most of what my kids could put on right now is either loud garbage engineered to hijack their attention, or it’s fine for eight minutes and then someone says something I have to walk them through at dinner. That’s not a break. That’s a second job. I’m not resting either — I’m in the doorway with one eye on the TV, doing quality control on my own afternoon.

That’s the thing nobody names. Parents don’t feel guilty about screen time. They feel exhausted by it. From the vetting. From the hovering. From the muting.

What makes a show actually motivational for kids?

A motivational show for kids isn’t one that tells them to believe in themselves. It’s one that ends and makes them get up.

Nobody’s child was ever inspired by a cartoon delivering a lesson. Preachy doesn’t move a nine-year-old.

The real test is simpler, and you can run it yourself this afternoon. Did they get up, or did they need another episode to feel okay? Did they ask a question? Did they go find their brother? Did they want to make something?

That’s it. Not “was it educational.” Did the show return something — or did it take ninety minutes and hand back a kid crankier than the one who sat down?

Motivational shows for kids, streaming now

Every title on We The Studios clears the same three rules: no profanity, no sexual content, no glorifying alcohol. Every show. Every episode. Not a rating we slap on afterward — the standard something has to meet before it goes on the platform at all.

Raising Reynolds follows a Kentucky homebuilder, his wife, and their four adopted kids in a town of 300 people. My kids watch a family build things with their hands and get quiet in a way I still don’t fully understand.

Mr. Miami & Me is a single dad and his daughter. If you’re raising kids who are figuring out that families come in different shapes, this one does the work without a lecture.

That Girl Lola is there because sometimes they just need to laugh and I need forty minutes.

You don’t preview it. You don’t sit there with the remote in your hand. You get to go sit down too.

Go sit down

Here’s my actual advice, mother of four to whoever’s reading this at 2 PM with a kid melting into the tile:

Let them rest. Let yourself rest. The summer is long, the day is hot, and nobody is behind. Just be a little choosy about what’s on. That’s the whole job.

Then go get in the pool — because in about forty minutes they’re going to be ready to go again, and you’re going to want to have been sitting down.

XO, Cara

Start Watching

It’s 2 PM in Orlando and it is 97 degrees.
