If you have ever hurried to stop a movie, skipped a scene or covered your child’s eyes, you are not alone.
Pew Research Center has found:
- 85% of parents say their child age 12 or younger watches YouTube.
- 51% say their child watches YouTube daily.
- 46% of parents whose young child watches YouTube say their child has encountered age-inappropriate videos.
- Among children ages 5 to 11 who watch YouTube, that figure rises to 56%.
- 60% of parents are concerned about their child accessing sexually explicit content online.
- 59% are concerned about violent online content.
- 67% believe technology companies should do more to control what children can see and do online.
Are Parental Controls for Streaming Services Enough?
Parental controls for streaming services help, but they do not always prevent an uncomfortable surprise. A family may choose something that appears appropriate, only to encounter an unexpected scene, joke or message halfway through it.
Finding something the entire family can enjoy can require researching titles, checking ratings and reviews, previewing programs or keeping the remote close at hand. Even then, parents may not feel comfortable allowing their children to browse streaming catalogs unsupervised.
